AIC Techno Opens Its Doors to 135 Bengal-Based Startups Across Three Growth Stages

West Bengal’s first Atal Incubation Centre has launched its inaugural cohort with 135 startups across three stages of growth

Kolkata has a new space for founders building businesses across technology, social innovation and the creative economy.

AIC Techno, West Bengal’s first Atal Incubation Centre supported by NITI Aayog and the Atal Innovation Mission, launched its inaugural cohort on July 26, bringing 135 startups into its incubation ecosystem.

The cohort is spread across three programmes: 25 growth-stage startups in the acceleration programme, 35 startups in the incubation programme and 75 startups in pre-incubation.

The numbers tell only part of the story. What stands out about the cohort is the range of businesses and founders it brings together. The startups span areas from deep tech to social innovation, with ventures at very different stages of their journey, from early-stage ideas to a company that has already reached an annual recurring revenue of around ₹23 crore.

For AIC Techno’s Chief Mentor, Meghdut RoyChowdhury, the larger question is whether founders from the region should have to leave Bengal to find the support they need.

“Why should Bengal’s best ideas have to leave home to grow?”

That question captures the thinking behind what AIC Techno is attempting to build.

A Cohort That Reflects Different Stages of Growth

AIC Techno has chosen not to restrict its first cohort to startups at a single stage.

The 75 ventures in pre-incubation are at the beginning of their journey, while the 35 startups in the incubation programme are further along. The 25 startups in the acceleration programme represent the growth-stage end of that spectrum.

Bringing these founders into the same ecosystem creates opportunities for interaction between people who may be building very different businesses but are dealing with many of the same challenges that come with entrepreneurship.

The mix also reflects AIC Techno’s focus areas, which include social innovation and social business, emerging technologies such as AI, cybersecurity and EdTech, and media, entertainment and design.

Building More Than a Conventional Incubator

AIC Techno’s approach extends beyond providing startups with a place to work.

Its facility brings together state-of-the-art coworking spaces, labs, event venues, mentors and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence. The ecosystem also includes co-living facilities, restaurants, a 24/7 gym and wellness studios.

For founders, the aim is to have access to several parts of the startup-building process within the same ecosystem. Alongside infrastructure, AIC Techno provides access to expertise and support across areas such as product development, market access, finance, legal, intellectual property and fundraising.

The centre is also designed to bring founders into contact with investors, industry experts and other ecosystem participants. This wider network is particularly relevant for startups that need support beyond their immediate product or business model as they grow.

A Five-Year Ambition Starts With the First 135

The inaugural cohort is the beginning of a much larger plan.

AIC Techno aims to support the creation of 500 startups over the next five years, with a focus on entrepreneurs from Eastern and North-Eastern India.

That gives the first 135 startups a significance beyond being the centre’s opening batch. They are the first group through which AIC Techno will build its founder community, develop relationships across the ecosystem and create a base for future cohorts.

The centre is also looking to involve investors, mentors, corporates, policymakers and other ecosystem enablers as it expands. For AIC Techno, building a stronger startup environment means creating connections between these different groups, rather than working with founders in isolation.

Applications for the Next Cohort Open Soon

With the inaugural cohort now underway, AIC Techno is preparing to open rolling applications for its next cohort from the last week of September 2026.

The upcoming intake will give founders another opportunity to enter the centre’s pre-incubation, incubation or acceleration programmes, depending on the stage of their venture.

For the wider ecosystem, the next few months will also be an opportunity to engage with the centre and its growing community of startups. Investors, mentors, corporates, policymakers and other ecosystem enablers interested in working with AIC Techno can become part of that network as it develops.

The first 135 startups have now begun their journey at AIC Techno. The larger test will be what grows around them, and whether the ecosystem can help more founders build ambitious companies without having to look elsewhere for the infrastructure, networks and support they need.
